Hello World!
Now for real, hello world! Hello to the world of ultra-cycling and adventure cycling. Ulter is finally here, after a few months of uncertainty. Right now, anyone can use our service to analyze their adventures, ultras, races, events, and more.
In this version, 2.2, the only way to get data into the platform is through Intervals.icu. Intervals is a fantastic website that allows you to connect dozens of different devices you may use (Wahoo, Garmin, Hammerhead, COROS, Suunto…) and view all their data. Ulter, therefore, allows you to connect your Intervals profile to our website and use that data to perform analysis focused on ultra-cycling.
Why was Ulter built this way? Synchronizing devices directly is expensive and currently very limited. For example, Strava itself — another service from which we could obtain data and which is widely used across the cycling world — currently does not allow external services to connect to its API (the technology used to share information between websites). So, for now, the only viable alternative is the one we are using. And honestly, we believe it is better to have something that works, even if it is not perfect, than to spend a year or more waiting for answers from big companies.
So this is the reality we currently live in: you need an Intervals.icu account (again, this is just a personal opinion, but it’s a fantastic platform for cyclists), you need to have a device connected directly to Intervals.icu (it cannot be Strava, since they also do not allow their data to be shared further once it has reached Intervals), and once that is done, all that remains is to create an account and start using Ulter!
If you try Ulter, we would love to hear what you think. Every piece of feedback helps us grow the project and adapt it better to the real needs of the community. We are open to listening, receiving comments, hearing what you think we could improve, answering questions, and ultimately helping you analyze your ultras.
